This is my list of Top Trends in Interior Design for 2014 {Part 2}. This is the year of the anti-neutral… dare to be bold! Make sure that you have seen Part 1 https://boxwoodlaneinteriors.wordpress.com/2014/01/02/be-inspired-top-trends-in-interior-design-for-2014-part-1/.
6. Neoclassical Accents
I love to see neoclassical accents implemented in two very different aesthetic directions. The first of which is a glamorous nod to our past (interior designer Mary McDonald is known for this). Marble obelisks, gilded mirrors and greek key trim are a couple of neoclassical accents that will continue to be in high demand for 2014. How you style a room can help accentuate these pieces. Example, place a gilded neoclassical mirror as the only hanging object on a dark accent wall (as discussed in Part 1). Be cautious of using neoclassical accents in spaces heavy with pattern. A much lighter approach is to introduce neoclassical garden pieces such as urns or stone busts into an interior or exterior space in your home.
Be prepared to see a lot of busts in 2014!
7. Light Wood Tones
Think more blonde or honey-tone rather than the gray washed look made so popular by major retailers such as Restoration Hardware in recent years. If you are drawn to Scandinavian design or mid-century style, you are going to love this. Do not be afraid to mix in accents such as a desk chair in a space with predominately dark finished wood (contrast is much more pleasing to the eye than a near match).
8. Malachite
This highly sought after green stone is known for its color variation and believed to bring luck in relationships and business. Authentic malachite is commonly used in decorative accessories, while faux malachite print is making a comeback in textiles and wallpaper. Do not be afraid of clichés with your application. Malachite has a distinct, handsome aesthetic that adds tremendous value to traditionally masculine paces such as a library, home office or wet bar.
9. Marbleized Wallpaper
It is like dressing your walls with vintage book covers. This look adds depth and intrigue to tight spaces, while making larger spaces feel warm and cozy.
10. Lucite
Lucite made a strong comeback starting around 2009 and it continues to grow in popularity. Lucite is not to be overdone. Limit one piece of accent furniture per room (exception dining room chairs). I love to see Lucite used in accessories… the base of a decorative objet, small box or lamp base. A Lucite cocktail table is wonderful solution for a crowded living room or in a space with a strong color palette.
Perhaps the most recognizable Lucite furniture piece is the Louis Kartell ghost chair (made famous to a whole new generation in Blair Waldorf’s dining room on Gossip Girl). This is the perfect compliment to a bedroom vanity or desk. We are also seeing a lot of ghost chairs at events and available through rental companies.
